Science, History and agricultural modernization in Latin America

The main objective of this dossier is to map and analyze the specificities of programs, laws and projects that sought to break with traditional agricultural practices between the 19th and 21st centuries - creating regional, transnational or global models based on economic and social development narratives.

Science, History and agricultural modernization in Latin America

Science, History and agricultural modernization in Latin America (HALAC Journal - Historia Ambiental Latinoamericana y Caribeña)

Agriculture and livestock, in a broader approach, cannot be reduced to the idea of activities aimed at human survival. More than that, especially from the nineteenth century on, governments, scientists or farmers also saw farming as an important tool for strengthening the state, nation building and geopolitics in Latin America: legislation, policies or university curricula mediated the advance of the agricultural frontier over the hinterlands of the continent. With access to new research sources, historians and researchers interested in discussing how Latin America became one of the world's major agricultural producers in a relatively short period, are confronted with experiences and experiments previously unknown or unexplored in their potential. Thus, the main objective of this dossier is to map and analyze the specificities of programs, laws and projects that sought to break with traditional agricultural practices between the 19th and 21st centuries - creating regional, transnational or global models based on economic and social development narratives.

Thus, this dossier is interested in works that dialogue with the relations between science, agriculture and politics based on
a) Development and rural extension projects;
b) History of science and agriculture;
c) Exchanges of tools, courses and agricultural practices;
d) History of the use of pesticides;
e) History of pests and diseases;
f) Environmental history and landscape transformation;
g) Transnational experiences on the agricultural commodities

a) Proyectos de desarrollo y extensión rural;

b) Historia de la ciencia y la agricultura;

c) Intercambio de herramientas, cursos y prácticas agrícolas;

d) Historia del uso de agroquímicos;

e) Historial de plagas y enfermedades;

f) Historia ambiental y transformación ambiental;

g) Experiencias transnacionales en productos agrícolas
