Die Abteilung Kunstgeschichte der TU Wien veranstaltet am Freitag, den 24.11.17 die eintägige internationale Konferenz „Entangled Histories. Austrian-Australian Relationships in Arts and Architecture“ (Website: australien-in-wien.com).

Die deutsch-englischsprachige Konferenz will anhand von Fallbeispielen die lange und vielschichtige kulturelle Verflechtungsgeschichte zwischen beiden Ländern in den Blick nehmen. Ausgangspunkt dafür ist das australische Forschungsprojekt zum Erbe des Bauhauses in Australien ("Bauhaus Australia 2019", Melbourne School of Design, msd.unimelb.edu.au/bauhaus-australia). Dementsprechend wird der Schwerpunkt der Konferenz auf der Architektur und der Malerei liegt. Beginnend mit den Forschungs- und Expeditionsreisen im 18. und 19. Jahrhundert, lässt sich eine wechselseitige Geschichte des wissenschaftlichen wie künstlerischen Interesses nachzeichnen. Hier nahm zunächst die Malerei eine herausragende Rolle als Verbreitungs- und Darstellungsmedium „Australiens“ in Mitteleuropa ein.

Die Konferenz „Entangled Histories“ wird unterstützt von: Australische Botschaft Wien; Österreichisch-Australischen Gesellschaft; VS Vereinigte Spezialmöbelfabriken Tauberbischofsheim/Deutschland und Fakultät für Architektur und Raumplanung der TU Wien.

Die Veranstaltung ist öffentlich, eine Teilnahmegebühr wird nicht erhoben. Anmeldungen bitte bis spätestens 20. November 2017 unter australien@tuwien.ac.at.

The Department of Art History at TU Wien will host the International One-Day Conference “Entangled Histories. Austrian-Australian Relationships in Arts and Architecture, 19th-21st Century“, which takes place on Friday, November 24, 2017 (website: australien-in-wien.com).

Using an Australian research project on the influences of the Bauhaus Movement in Australia („Bauhaus Australia 2019“, Melbourne School of Design: https://msd.unimelb.edu.au/bauhaus-australia) as starting point for further inquiry, this conference explores the long and culturally diverse, entangled history between the two countries. Although exploring a wide range of issues, the main focus of this conference lies on painting and architecture. Colonial expeditions, which took place in the the 18th and 19th century, can be seen as a beginning for an entangled history of both countries, which reveals amongst others similar interests in science and arts. Paintings, for example, played in an important role in this regard as media of communication and representation of „Australia“ in Central Europe.

The conference is organized by the Department of Art History, TU Wien and kindly supported by: Australian Embassy Vienna; Austrian-Australian Society; VS Vereinigte Spezialmöbelfabriken Tauberbischofsheim/Germany, and the Dean of the Faculty for Architecture and Spatial Planning, TU Wien.
