The first session of the annual Meeting took place in March 2000 and has now become a major gathering for social scientists working in the area.

Each year, the EUI in Florence welcome over 150 scholars—young academics and renowned experts—from Europe and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) who work together for three days on a range of topics each supervised by two Workshop Directors.

The Regione Toscanaö (Regional Government of Tuscany), since the first session, and the Ente Cassa di Risparmio di Firenzeö from the seventh one provide generous financial support to the Meeting.

Since its creation in 1976, the EUI has developed a tradition of intellectual debate within a multicultural and international environment, and provides the perfect setting for the Annual Mediterranean Meeting. These meetings are a unique occasion for young academics to submit their research to experts, and to develop research networks which promote cooperation in research and policy in the field.
The Annual Mediterranean Meeting is organised around a core of up to 15 Workshops, each run by 2 Directors and with 10–12 participants.

Workshop participants present and discuss papers containing original research, prepare joint publications and strategies for continued collaboration.
Workshop topics and directors vary from one Meeting to another and are chosen on the basis of competitive calls.

Candidats for participation in a workshop con apply by sending both:
-the filled out online application form
(including the abstract of the proposed paper-250 words in english)
-a curriculum vitae of max. 5 pages
