Himalayan Journeys: Circulations and Transformations

For this conference our goal is to foreground movement as a particular social dynamic and to consider mobility and circulatory regimes, trails, routes and roads as the “connective tissue” within various historical and political contexts and against the backdrop of rooted cultures and identities inscribed in particular landscapes.

What can the study of circulation tell us about the Himalayas, their social and spatial dynamics? Does the Himalayan social fabric produce peculiar circulatory regimes and pathways? How have relations between states and circulatory phenomena evolved? What are the new cultural and moral geographies that emerge from this global-cum-local circulation?

At this time, we are planning for the conference to take place in person on the recently built Campus Condorcet in Aubervilliers (north of Paris).

Information about the conference topics and the submission process can be found in the Call for papers here. Full details are available on the conference website here.

If you are interested, please submit your proposal on this website using the “New submission” link in the menu (you will need to register and create an account first). The deadline for all individual paper proposals is 1 November 2021.
