Questions of how Frenchness and Jewishness intersect and influence one another will be central to this edited collection. These lines of inquiry shine a light on the importance of transnational frameworks and interdisciplinary perspectives within Jewish history. This volume will incorporate approaches from history, anthropology, sociology, religious studies, and philosophy.

Call for Submissions: Jewish Ideas of France: Migration, Diaspora, and Empire

French and Jewish history, and the experiences of the many communities existing within these spaces, are increasingly intertwined, incorporating people and ideas that move across borders and empires. They traverse geographical and theoretical boundaries and expand our understanding of transnationalism. Likewise, a growing emphasis on the connections between Jewish migration and identity in France and the French Empire is shaping how scholars approach broader historical developments and concepts of belonging. We are putting out a call for chapters for a proposed edited volume titled Jewish Ideas of France: Migration, Diaspora, and Empire, which will bring together innovative approaches to highlight the importance of migration, diaspora, and empire for Jewish communities in metropolitan France and beyond. We have an interested publisher and are looking for contributions to solidify our publishing contract.

By widening its scope to examine global Jewish diasporas and decentering national narratives and political frontiers, Jewish Ideas of France will thus hold space for a more nuanced understanding of French Jewish history.

This collection will offer new ways to conceive of French and Jewish identities in the nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-first centuries within the French and Francophone world. It will bring together scholarship that transcends national frontiers and opens new fronts in Jewish studies. Furthermore, it will emphasize that there is no single Jewish community in France. Rather, Jewish communities and identities have been heterogeneous according to time and place. The collection will thus unveil the fluidity of French and Jewish conceptions of belonging over time.

We welcome chapter proposals across the disciplines, representing cutting-edge approaches that invigorate how we examine the past and reveal the intricate connections that have influenced French and Jewish identities within and outside of the Hexagon.

Please send chapter proposals of 500 words with your contact information to Nick Underwood (nunderwood@collegeofidaho) and Meredith Scott (meredith.scott@afacademy.af.edu) by September 1, 2022. We will evaluate the submissions and notify those we have selected by the end of October 2022. Final submissions will be due for review on September 1, 2023. Please direct any questions to Meredith and Nick.

We will accept proposal submissions in English or French, but, if accepted, final essays will need to be submitted for review in English.
