In 2018, the Chao Center for Asian Studies at Rice University, home of Transnational Asia: An Online Interdisciplinary Journal, will celebrate its 10th anniversary. In order to mark this milestone, the editors call for papers on the broad theme of Transnational Asian Studies, to be published in a special anniversary volume of Transnational Asia (Fall 2018). The editors would like to invite articles that address themes and issues including, but not limited to, the following:

During the past decade or so, it has become increasingly common to view “Asia” as a transnational and/or inter-regional entity. This is a notable departure from the dominant style of national-state studies engendered by the Cold War. But a central question remains: what exactly is “transnational” Asia, and what do we gain by emphasizing this sort of perspective? And what might we lose? Where do comparative studies fit in the picture—or do they?

In the current age of “globalization,” we are witnessing the intensified flow of goods, ideas, people, technologies, and lifestyles across national and continental borders. Needless to say, such flows are sustained by economic, political, cultural and ideological, factors. Does this mean that there are fundamental commonalities between, say, the flow of immigrants from Southeast Asia to East Asia and the flow of computer games from Korea to China, or the travel of TV dramas from Korea to the Philippines and the travel of skilled workers from India to Japan? Are these transnational movements, in other words, sustained by a certain universality belonging to the late stage of global capitalism? Or are they each discrete and separate phenomenon? How should researchers most productively deal with such questions?

Although transnationalism, broadly defined, has been a prominent feature of the “modern” era—with analogues that predate by centuries the rise of nation states—it has often created various forms of resistance, as we know, for example, from studies of refugees, immigration, colonialism and other forms of imperialism. But in recent years, we have begun to see resistance to the idea of transnationalism (and/or globalization) itself. This anti-transnational/anti-global tendency is evident in particularly virulent forms of anti-foreignism, protectionism, and hostility to multi-culturalism. How do we understand this sort resistance and exclusion as it pertains to Asia?

In short, for our special anniversary volume of Transnational Asia we are encouraging the submission of cutting-edge articles that explore, from the standpoint of theory and/or practice, what it means to talk about transnational Asia, past, present and future.

The editors wish to have all articles in hand by July 2018. All submitted articles will be peer-reviewed. Transnational Asia encourages the use of audio and/or visual materials because of its digital-only platform, though it is not a requirement. Authors are asked to secure any necessary publication rights for all audio-visual content submitted by the time of publication.

Our target date for the anniversary volume publication is September 2018.
