The School of History at the University of Liverpool invites applications for two postgraduate research studentships in history. The studentships will cover the cost of tuition fees payable at the UK / EU rate for three years. Successful candidates may be given the opportunity to undertake paid undergraduate teaching within the School (normally no more than four hours class contact time per week).
The studentships are open to applications from candidates wishing to conduct postgraduate research in any historical period, region or field in which the School is able to provide supervision. However, we would particularly encourage applications to work on one of the following projects:
Authority and Resistance in the Iberian Atlantic, c. 1600 – c. 1850. The successful applicant will conduct comparative research on notions and representations of authority and resistance (collective and individual) within the Iberian Atlantic world. The timeframe is defined by the emergence, development and relative consolidation of concepts of authority and resistance in the Americas between the early colonial period (c. 1600) and the first decades after independence (c. 1850). The student will be able to work and develop her or his academic profile within the wider research project Rethinking the Iberian Atlantic (see: http://www.liv.ac.uk/iberianatlantic/index.htm).
Race, Religion and Community in Slave-Trade Liverpool, c.1770 - c.1820. The successful applicant will explore notions of race, religion and community in relation to the Transatlantic Slave Trade, through a focus on the congregation of Toxteth St James in Liverpool. The timeframe is defined, on the one hand, to encompass the period of the height of the Slave Trade, its abolition and the immediate aftermath. On the other hand, it reflects the availability of baptismal and other records relating to the church. The student will be able to work and develop her or his academic profile within the Research Centre for the Study of International Slavery (see: http://www.liv.ac.uk/history/research/CSIS.htm).
For further information about these projects please see our website at www.liv.ac.uk/history. If you want to know more you are welcome to contact the Director of Graduate Studies, Dr Matt Houlbrook, at M.Houlbrook@liv.ac.uk.
Applications must be received no later than March 2, 2007.
Information on how to apply is available at:

Please indicate on the application form that you wish to be considered for the postgraduate research studentship.

We offer a limited degree of financial support to MA and PhD students on a competitive basis. This includes up to five scholarships of £1,000 to candidates applying for its MA programmes. These scholarships are designed to attract and reward students whose record of academic excellence and potential means that they are likely to be in a position to apply successfully for funding for postgraduate study (from AHRC or ESRC in the case of UK applicants). No more than two of these awards will normally be made to students who are not graduates of the University of Liverpool. All PhD students may apply for conference bursaries and research grants.
