The IO BIO Project is designed to create a biographical dictionary with short biographies of Secretaries-General (SGs), or other executive heads with different titles, of International Organizations (IOs). The biographical literature on secretaries-general is limited, giving an incomplete picture of the variety of people who have held these positions and the interactions between them.

The IO BIO Project is designed to give a more complete picture of these individuals and their interactions. It focuses on those secretaries-general of intergovernmental organizations who have left a mark for any reason, whether good, bad or unusual. The IO BIO Project includes deceased secretaries-general and those who have been out of office for five years or more and most probably will not return in office as SG. The Project excludes non-governmental organizations for practical size reasons.

The short biographies (between 800 and 3,600 words; the length is determined by level of importance, with three category levels) will present an accurate and coherent description of the life and career of each Secretary-General. Entries provide biographical data, a balanced account of life and work, as well as references and a picture. To allow for group analyses authors are encouraged to pay attention to the social and professional connections of secretaries-general.

Scholars and practitioners are carrying out the IO BIO Project on a voluntary basis. More information about its Instructions for Authors, Model Biography (Joseph Avenol of the League of Nations), and its Database (now covering the SGs of some 130 intergovernmental organizations) are available at the website www.ru.nl/fm/reinalda (then select IO BIO link). The Database shows the entries.

We are currently looking for experts willing to write an entry in the biographical dictionary, but also for people willing to support the IO BIO Project with their comments and ideas. We appreciate it if you can suggest potential authors for one or more entries. When applying to write an entry, please provide your name, institutional affiliation, and contact information, and provide the arguments for why you are a good author for this entry.

To express an interest, or for more information, please contact us at: iobio@fm.ru.nl.
