Call for Papers

The First International RICHIE Historical Conference
"Which Europe(s)? New approaches to the History of European Integration in the 20th century"
March 31st - April 1st, 2005

The Aims of the RICHIE Network

As a result of the progression of European Integration and of the enlargement of the European Union, more and more research centres in Europe and beyond have developed new approaches to describe the historical background of this process. The great variety of these new studies is stimulating but the international debate remains very difficult, especially for young researchers, because of the problems involved in sharing information, confronting opinions and gaining access to new perspectives on current research.
That's why we need an international research network which will serve as a forum among historians. Therefore, in order to gather young researchers from various countries, the RICHIE network will organise its first conference in Paris, March 31st - April 1st, 2005.

The conference will be jointly hosted by La Sorbonne (University Paris IV) on the first day and by Sciences-Po (Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris) on the second day. These prestigious institutions are located in the centre of Paris.
The conference is to be held under the scientific direction of Professors Eric Bussière (Paris IV) and Maurice Vaïsse (Sciences-Po). The scientific committee includes Prof. Gérard Bossuat (Cergy-Pontoise), Prof. Robert Franck (Paris I), Prof. Wolfgang Krieger (Universität Marburg), Prof. Michel Dumoulin [Louvain-la-Neuve], Prof. Antonio Varsori [Padova], Prof. Pascaline Winand [EUI, Florence] and Piers Ludlow [LSE].

Conference Themes

Researchers are invited to submit papers within the general area of the RICHIE network, namely the History of European Integration in the 20th century, which is divided into four themes:
-Political Integration: federalist or inter-governmental visions, political European institutions besides the EU (Council of Europe), "checks and balances" of the various EU institutions.
-Economic Integration: analysis of economists, firms and associations as well as the history of liberal (EFTA) and integrated Europe (ECSC, EEC, European Union),
-Social and Cultural Integration: reflection on cultural links between citizens and on a social European model by political parties, trade unions and non-governmental organisations.
-Europe in International Relations: Cold war and post-cold war context, NATO, decolonisation, relations between great powers and the European integration process, transatlantic ties.
Eligibility

PhD-Students or post-doctoral researchers will be eligible to apply for participation in this conference. The successful applicants will have their room and board costs covered by the RICHIE network. RICHIE might also make a contribution towards travel costs whenever students are unable to secure alternative funds for their travelling to academic conferences.
Submissions

Interested young researchers should submit an application, in English, French or German, including a resume (please add a brief abstract of your thesis, 200 words) and a 500 word summary of their proposed conference presentation. This presentation should deal with the conference theme "Which Europe(s)": New approaches to the History of European Integration in the 20th century ". Candidates are welcome to refer to their ongoing doctoral dissertation or research and to the problems encountered in their field.

Abstracts should be emailed simultaneously to the three Conference secretaries by the deadline of January 24th, 2005:

- François-Xavier Lafféach (IUE, Florence): François-Xavier.Laffeach@IUE.it ;
- Katrin Rücker (Sciences-Po, Paris): katrin.rucker@sciences-po.fr ;
- and Laurent Warlouzet (Paris IV-Sorbonne): laurentwarlouzet@yahoo.fr
