The Cinema Studies Institute in the Faculty of Arts & Science at the University of Toronto, St. George invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in the field of Film and Media History of the Global South. The position will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an expected start date of July 1, 2021, or shortly thereafter.

Assistant Professor of Film and Media History of the Global South (University of Toronto)

Candidates must have earned a Ph.D. in Film Studies, Film and Media Studies, or another discipline related to the position as described by the date of appointment or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellence in both teaching and research. We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and strengthen our Institute’s existing strengths.

We are seeking applicants with demonstrated extensive knowledge of film and media history and historiography with a specialization in moving image media and culture of the Global South. Demonstrated knowledge of critical methodologies informed by Indigenous, post-colonial, critical race, feminist, or queer thought is particularly welcome. Demonstrated knowledge from a range of approaches that may include the aesthetic, cultural, industrial, economic, political, and/or technological aspects of that history would be considered an asset, as would complementary demonstrated expertise in sound studies or environmental media.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach in the undergraduate and graduate programs at the Cinema Studies Institute, in both required core courses and more specialized electives; to supervise and mentor students; to participate in activities at the Institute; and to pursue innovative and independent research at the highest international level while establishing an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program that will expand our current research strengths. For more information on the Cinema Studies Institute, visit http://www.cinema.utoronto.ca/.

Excellence in research will be demonstrated through the quality of the writing sample submitted as part of the application, a record of publications in top-ranked and field-relevant academic journals or forthcoming publications meeting high international standards, the submitted research statement, a record of presentations at significant conferences, awards and accolades, evidence of an innovative research program, and strong endorsements by referees of high standing.

Excellence in teaching will be demonstrated through a record of teaching accomplishments, letters of reference, and a teaching dossier including a statement of teaching philosophy, sample course syllabi, and teaching evaluations, submitted as part of the application.

Candidates are also expected to show evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment demonstrated through the application materials.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The University of Toronto is one of the world’s top research-intensive universities and, with its multicultural student body and cosmopolitan setting, it offers the opportunity to teach, conduct research, and live in one of the world’s most diverse and dynamic cities.

Equity and diversity are essential to academic excellence. We seek candidates who value diversity and whose research, teaching and service bear out our commitment to equity. Candidates are therefore also asked to submit a 1‐2 page statement of contributions to equity and diversity, which might cover topics such as (but not limited to): research or teaching that incorporates a focus on underrepresented communities, the development of inclusive pedagogies, or the mentoring of students from underrepresented groups.
