The position forms part of the project “Spandau, Sugamo and Landsberg: The beginnings of international criminal penitentiary and their influence on the future of international criminal justice”, funded by Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) and supervised by PD Dr. Boris Burghardt (Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin) and Prof. Dr. Florian Knauer (FSU Jena). The interested candidate is meant to analyse the penal system imposed at Sugamo Prison in the aftermath of the Tokyo War Crimes Trials.

Doctoral Candidate in the Field of Legal Contemporary History, International Criminal Law, Penitentiary Law and Criminology

The position forms part of the DFG-project “Spandau, Sugamo and Landsberg: The beginnings of international criminal penitentiary and their influence on the future of international criminal justice” supervised by PD Dr. Boris Burghardt (Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin) and Prof. Dr. Florian Knauer (FSU Jena). The interested candidate is meant to analyse the penal system imposed at Sugamo Prison in the aftermath of the Tokyo War Crimes Trials. The object of investigation is thus located at the intersection of legal contemporary history, international criminal law, penitentiary law and criminology.

Tasks:
- Conducting independent research on “The penal system at Sugamo Prison in the aftermath of the Tokyo War Crimes Trials”
- Actively participating in designing the conceptual and methodological framework of the DFG-project
- Contributing to the preparation and conducting of two workshops on topics related to the overall DFG-project
- Producing research results of a publishable quality: Seeking to publish one’s own results in the form of a doctoral thesis as well as contributing to further publications of the projects is expected
- Presentation of the respective results at national and international academic conferences

Profile:
- Completed graduate degree in law, preferably with distinction, or an equivalent degree in a related subject, e.g., history
- Proven expertise in the areas of legal contemporary history, international criminal law, criminal penitentiary and/or criminology; great interest and high motivation with regards to becoming acquainted with the remaining areas of (criminal) law to be taken into account throughout the project
- An overall and profound interest in contemporary historical research and the readiness to search for, procure and analyse original sources from national and international archives
- Fluency in or very good knowledge of the English language, especially with regards to the necessity to work with historical sources; knowledge of Japanese is considered an asset, however not an exclusion criterion

- Remuneration according to the regulations of the collective agreement of the public sector of the German Länder (TV-L, Bestimmungen des Tarifvertrages für den öffentlichen Dienst der Länder) in salary group 13 including an annual special payment in line with tariff provisions

- Further possibilities for national and international networking with established scholars and practitioners of the respective fields, particularly through participation in the workshops to be carried out as part of the project
- High flexibility concerning working hours, location to work from as well as content-wise

The advertised position is offered part-time (20 hours/week) for a duration of 3 years (maximum until 30 June 2024).
