This workshop seeks to critically address power structures in audiovisual (re)productions in and from Latin America and discuss how these play a role in the societal construction and representation of individual and collective identities, the ‘us’ and the ‘other’. By doing so, it aims at understanding how these representations – and broader discourses associated therewith – can be critically examined through media productions (cinema, television, radio, photography etc.) and their use as historical sources. Envisioning Latin America hence aims at forging a constructive, crossdisciplinary debate on the uses of audiovisual documentation as primary sources in
academic research, both within historical sciences and related disciplines. Focusing on interdisciplinary research, we suggest the four following themes:
1. Imagining Culture: Codes and Constructions
2. Discourses and Representations of Alterity
3. Form matters: Effects and meaning across media
4. Audiovisual Industries and Cultural Networks
For this two-day workshop, we seek to unite early-career scholars who would like to engage in the critical study and understanding of audiovisual data produced in the 20th and 21st century. Three distinguished keynote speakers, Angélica Gómez-Müller (Université François Rabelais, Tours), Christian León (Universidad Andina Simón Bolivar, Quito) and Valeria Manzano (Universidad Nacional de San Martín, Buenos Aires), will present their current research and critically address on-going methodological debates in academia in- and outside of Latin America. Proposals are to be sent in either English or Spanish including title, abstract (approx. 300 words) and bionote to isabel.piniella@cgs.unibe.ch until April 13th, 2018. Accepted participants will be notified in May and the program will be announced by May 31st, 2018. Accommodation as well as a small travel allowance will be provided to all participants.
