Documenting the Chinese Community in Kuala Lumpur: Histories, Identities, and Memories

For a special issue in a Scopus-indexed journal:

Our key objectives are as follows:

1) To document the Chinese community in Kuala Lumpur from cultural, historical, political, and social perspectives;

2) To attribute agency to ethnic Chinese historical figures in Kuala Lumpur and their descendants;

3) To investigate the discursive contestations surrounding the role of Chinese community in Kuala Lumpur vis-a-vis mainstream Malay politics.

We hope to explore the history of the Chinese community in Kuala Lumpur, more specifically through the experiences and stories of Yap Ah Loy (1837-1885), who founded the city, and his descendants. We are interested in cultural studies, such as the cinematic and gastronomical histories of Kuala Lumpur and the literary works framed or inspired by its urban setting. This past, we believe, can illuminate the social transformations of the Chinese community in contemporary Kuala Lumpur.

Please submit your abstract (approximately 250-300 words) to us by December 31, 2022. Meanwhile, kindly let us know if you have any questions.
