The European Network Remembrance and Solidarity (https://enrs.eu/) is organizing a new outdoor exhibition, which deals with the issue of the multidimensional relationship between arts / artists and political power in East-Central Europe in the 20th-century.
The aim of the exhibition is to highlight the social significance and social responsibility of arts by showing the different aspects of the relationship between arts and power in East-Central Europe in the 20th century. The exhibition will present both how various political regimes used arts for their own purposes as well as the strategies artists employed to survive and create under pressure. Visitors are invited to see connections between politics and artworks that range from propaganda to protest, from survival to resistance, from collaboration and conformism to counterculture, and to understand the political dimension of such types of arts as: music, literature, visual art, film, or architecture. The exhibition tells the history of 20th century through the often controversial and turbulent stories of objects, space, media, or artists. In doing so, it not only sheds light on the different social and political contexts of art, but also highlights the difficulty of choices, civic responsibility, courage and creativity of artists who confronted the complex realities of totalitarian and authoritarian regimes. In this way, it can help us to better understand our history, but also inspire us to face the challenges of today. The exhibition is planned to be opened in the Autumn 2026.
The exhibition is curated by Dr. Gábor Danyi and Dr. Bartosz Dziewanowski-Stefańczyk (ENRS). The Exhibition’s Academic Board consists of renown experts: Dr. Andrea F. Bohlman; Dr. Anamaria Cătănuș; Dr. Gregor Feindt; Prof. Roger Griffin; Prof. Piotr Juszkiewicz; Dr. Łukasz Kamiński; Prof. Csaba G. Kiss; Dr. Pavlína Morganová; Dr. Beate Stoertkuhl.
Main tasks:
• researching materials for the exhibition scenario,
• elaborating historical contexts for specific sub-themes,
• co-writing the scenario of the exhibition.
Research areas:
General research area:
20th century art, including fine art, conceptual art, sculpture, architecture, music, film and literature from East-Central Europe, mainly from: the Baltic countries, Czech Republic, Germany, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Ukraine and Yugoslavia.
Specific research areas:
• the role of the arts in the construction of social utopias and in the development of different visions of the future (utopias and dystopias),
• socially engaged art (how art thematises issues such as ecology, environmental pollution, discrimination, human rights, feminism),
• the role of the arts in documenting genocide and war crimes and in processing collective trauma, art and official and unofficial memory,
• the role of the arts in identity-building (the contribution of the arts to the formation of nation-states, the creation of community and group identities, the differentiation of ethnic and cultural minorities),
• biographies of artists working under the totalitarian/authoritarian governments of 20th century East-Central Europe (collaboration, apoliticism, resistance, decision-making situations, forced paths),
• various means of repression of arts / artists (forms of censorship, differentiated cultural patronage, surveillance, imprisonment, exile, etc.),
• different strategies of artistic autonomy in totalitarian and authoritarian regimes (underground, grey zone, apolitical, cultural resistance, etc.),
• art, ideologies and propaganda,
• fascist and communist symbols in arts (sickle and hammer, red star, swastika),
• personality cult created, maintained and deconstructed by art,
• artworks as metaphors of freedom (how artists thematised and reflected on freedom in authoritarian and totalitarian dictatorships)

Requirements for candidates:
• a broad knowledge of issues related to the intersection of art and political power in East-Central Europe in the 20th century,
• Doctorate or PhD candidate status,
• English language skills of at least C1 level,
• the ability to research in libraries and archives, including online databases,
• the ability to write exciting, accessible texts and to summarise a topic concisely,
• art historians are particularly welcome

Your data collected during the current recruitment process will be processed until the end of the recruitment process and for a further 3 months after the end of the recruitment process in order to protect you against possible claims. Provision of data contained in the recruitment documents is not obligatory but is a condition for applying for a job at the Institute of the European Network Remembrance and Solidarity based in Warsaw. The provision of other data, to the extent not specified by law, will be treated as consent to the processing of personal data. The giving of consent in this case is voluntary and the consent so given may be revoked́ at any time.
