At the beginning of the 21st Century, the Herrenhausen Conference "Europe in a Non-European World" is discussing, how the future role of Europe is perceived by Europeans and external observers alike. It is about the challenges in history, economics, culture, and politics Europe is facing given the enormous shift of powers during the last century. Europe has left its mark - politically and economically but also culturally. But the situation has changed dramatically in recent decades: Even if speaking with one voice Europe is one actor amongst many who are striving for influence today.

Where is Europe’s new position? Will a new "concert of powers" be created? Is it the global financial and economic crises, that will bring back the "beggar my neighbor" policies of the 1930ies or will it be enough to recognize that interdependence and peaceful exchange are better than protectionist separation or the building of economic empires fighting each other? Are the virtues and the ideals of a democratic and constitutionally organized society resulting from the Age of Enlightenment still of importance today? And finally, how can global cultural phenomena as well as the search for common standards such as a mutual recognition of differences have a positive impact on a multipolar world?
