The projects proposed by scholarship applicants shall explicitly address transregional dimensions and interdependencies of social inequalities in Latin America. The research concept of desiguAldades.net provides further orientation. We specially welcome applications addressing the following topics:
- “Globalized Nature”: Transnational asymmetries of power and access to natural resources (agro-business, mining, tourism).
- Theoretical and methodological contributions to the research of inequalities from a global/entangled perspective.
- Linkages between gender, class, regional and ethno-racial dimensions of inequalities; social inequalities and (post)colonial legacies.
- Interconnections between social inequalities and struggles for citizenship: activism of social movements, public spheres and social inequalities; distributive consequences of new politics of recognition; interdependencies between inequalities and law at local, national and global level.
- Latin America as a laboratory of interdependent welfare regimes: economic and social policies; institutions and social mobility in history and present.
Deadline of application: March, 18, 2011. Scholarships can start as early as May, 1, 2011.
desiguALdades.net is looking forward to applications from a broad spectrum of the social sciences participating in the network. About the Network
The objective of desiguALdades.net is to work towards a paradigmatic shift in the research on social inequalities in Latin America. The intersections of different types of social inequalities and the global interdependencies of local constellations of social inequalities beyond the nation-state are at the focus of analysis. In order to achieve this paradigmatic shift, researchers from different regions and various fields as well as experts on either issues on social inequalities or on Latin America will work together. The network character of desiguALdades.net is explicitly set up to overcome persisting hierarchies in knowledge production in social sciences by developing new forms of academic practices based on dialogue and mutual exchange between researchers from different regional and different disciplinary contexts. The institutional core of the desiguALdades.net consists of four partners. The overarching responsibility for the research network rests with the Lateinamerika-Institut (LAI) and the Ibero-Amerikanisches Institut (IAI) as executive institutions. In addition, two other institutions with long experience in research and policy advice combined with an outstanding regional expertise on Latin America are integrated into the activities of the research network: the Deutsche Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE, German Development Institute) and the German Institute of Global and Area Studies (GIGA, Leibniz-Institut für Globale und Regionale Studien).
