4 Research scholarships "Transatlantic Tandem" at the Maria Sibylla Merian Center for Advanced Latin American Studies (CALAS)

In order to promote dialogue and exchange between young researchers, the Maria Sibylla Merian Center for Advanced Latin American Studies (CALAS) is offering a 4 to 8 month dual research scholarship within its "Transatlantic Tandem" program, based at its headquarters in Guadalajara, Mexico and its three regional centers in Quito, Ecuador/ Buenos Aires, Argentina and San José, Costa Rica. Two researchers, one from Latin America and one from Europe (Germany), will work in collaboration on a common research topic related to the CALAS approach. Their combined application should highlight the additional academic value of their cooperation. The application should also define the concrete outcomes and aims of their collaboration.

Thematic focus

Latin America counts on significant experiences in the processing of multiple crises. In facing these challenges, theoretical and empirical approaches are generated which are important not only for the region, but also for the understanding and general solutions to humanity's current problems. CALAS' trans-disciplinary research on "Coping with Crises from Latin American Perspectives" focuses on critical questions about how these crises and processes of change are provoked, accelerated, decelerated, perceived and reflected by different social actors. Proposals that are submitted should address in one way or another these general approaches of CALAS. We particularly welcome projects that show interest in more than one of the research areas covered by CALAS, and whose academic profile guarantees the interdisciplinary theoretical and methodological focuses which are required for research at CALAS. For more information about CALAS, please visit the Centre's website: www.calas.lat.

Conditions

The call is open to (post)doctoral applicants with a university education in the humanities or social sciences, but applications are also accepted in which one of the two persons does not hold a postgraduate degree but has additional qualifications and proven experience in civil society work related to the subject of the research project. An effective operational level of Spanish is required.
CALAS is committed to inclusion and the goal of gender equality. It explicitly welcomes applications from qualified persons with severe disabilities and handicaps. The CALAS scholarship program aims at gender parity and promotes affirmative action policies.
The scholarship recipient is expected to reside for the duration of the scholarship in the different cities where CALAS is located, and to participate in the activities and events of the CALAS. She/he will have the opportunity to make use of the resources of CALAS and the host institution, which cooperate with CALAS, including office space, access to libraries and research facilities.
